What Was This Week?

It’s been next to impossible to write about politics this week. I started to, a number of times, but they all ended with me tearing my hair out, and screaming into the void.

I began the day before Election Day in a flurry of anxiety and excitement for Tuesday, and then the Blue Wave hit. I started keeping tabs on races, and began an excited post that I planned on posting sometime late on Wednesday.

Then the President had his news conference, and he was quite nasty to some journalists, including Yamiche Alcindor, Jim Acosta, and Peter Alexander, not to mention April Ryan.

Then Jim Acosta had his credentials revoked.

Jeff Sessions, Matt Whittaker, Robert Mueller, Tucker Carlson’s lunacy, which I’ve just discovered doesn’t match up to the police report, but wait, there’s more.

Then the President attacked journalist, Abby Phillips.

Then he backed out of the Veteran’s Day visit to the American Cemetery in France during the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the end of World War I.

Then he was two hours late to dinner with the other leaders.

I’ve been offline for most of today, and I have to say it’s been a blessing.

I need to catch up, but I think I’m waiting for tomorrow’s podcasts to catch me up. I especially like MSNBC’s Deadline: White House with Nicolle Wallace.

So, what I’ve decided to do is to write a short piece on my feelings on Jim Acosta’s credentials, a slightly longer one for Tuesday, the one week anniversary of the Blue Wave about the Blue Wave, and completely ignore the disgrace of the man in the White House as he manages to embarrass this country once again with his petty, selfish, unAmerican conduct.

In his place, many others have stepped into the open space, and added their messages of honor to the veterans, all of them, but especially those we remember from one hundred years ago as they defeated the enemy, and brought the world together in peace.

I’ll leave you with these words from Laurence Binyon‘s poem, For the Fallen, published 21 Sept 1914:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Treat Yourself!

Coffee, Tea, Soda, Beer? What’s your go-to drink for your writing time?

My Favorites:

Coffee – I don’t drink coffee.

Tea – Adagio Teas The Walking Dead Daryl Tea and Twinings Prince of Wales Tea

Soda – Diet Coke, usually caffeine free

Beer – I don’t really drink beer, but I do love cider. My choice is Strongbow or Redd’s.

Incentives

I’m going to presume that you’ve kept some of your Halloween candy from last week. We have a lot of the mini ones, so they’re pretty tiny.

Why don’t you reward every 2500 words with a mini candy bar? Or add a quarter to a jar, and see where you are at the end of November. Choose a word count and take a walk about the neighborhood or get an extra coffee.

My incentive is getting to read another chapter in my Neil Gaiman book, The View from the Cheap Seats.

30 Days of Nano – Day 9

Easy Meals

1. Crock-pot Lasagna – this is amazing and easy. My family loves it!

2. Quiche – another quick and easy, delicious family meal.

3.  Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (in the blue box)

4. Casserole made from leftovers – mix the leftovers, add a sauce (pasta, Worcestershire, gravy, HP sauce), if you have rice put it on the bottom, if you have mashed potatoes, spread it on top, add shredded cheese, and bake for thirty minutes at 350°.

5. Pour a can of Chunky soup over cooked rice. You can add cheese, sour cream, crackers, croutons, onion or tortilla strips.

Now, that dinner is finished, get back to writing!

Morning Routine

Whatever office hours you decided on yesterday, whether you have a day job that is not Nanowrimo or a family to take care of, not to mention getting ready for Thanksgiving, visiting your relatives, planning the rest of the year for you and your family all while trying to write the Great American Novel, you will still need a morning routine to get you started everyday.

Take a minute to figure out what should be part of your morning routine.

Will it be coffee? Tea?

Breakfast?

Read a chapter of a book?

Read an inspirational quotation from a favorite author?

Prayer?

Rosary?

Hygiene – shower, brushing teeth, shaving?

November – Gratitude – Recipe

The original of this recipe was as a pie, directly from a colleague who was born and raised in New Orleans. Sweet Potato Pie is a traditional Southern dessert, very similar to pumpkin pie, although I think a little bit sweeter. I was on a trip to Virginia a couple of years ago, and was ecstatic to find a sweet potato pie in the local McDonald’s alongside their apple pies. It was amazing! Even years later, I miss it in my northeast home.

My mother could not grasp the idea that this pie was dessert or that it is typically eaten chilled. For her, it was a side dish and that’s what it became in our house for Thanksgiving.

Over the years I’ve changed it, and sometimes when I can’t find the extra large Keebler graham cracker crust I will make it as a casserole. That is the recipe that I’m going to share with you this November.

I know that this is a fall type food, but I will eat this all year round.

​Sweet Potato Casserole

This started out as a pie, but then I got a little lazy, and it became a casserole. It is still pretty awesome!

Ingredients:

1 lg can of yams or sweet potatoes

1 stick of unsalted butter

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1 bag of mini marshmallows

Directions:

1. Cook the yams on the stovetop. When hot, drain and return the yams to the saucepan and mash.

2. Add the stick of butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and mix thoroughly either by hand or with a mixer.

3. Transfer the smooth yams to a casserole dish. Cover with the marshmallows.

4. Bake in an oven at 350° for thirty-five minutes or until marshmallows are golden brown.

5. Serve as a side dish. Yummy.

30 Days of Nano – Day 7

Office Hours

Give yourself office hours. 

Don’t answer the phone or the door (emergencies excepted). Don’t turn on the television (the Kindle counts). Turn off the WiFi. Get yourself in office mode. I make a cup of tea. On occasion, I’ll light a scented candle, but it’s not particularly my go-to; it’s just a sometimes go-to.

My husband works at home, and he’s always interrupting me, so I will need to remind him that I’m working even if all I’m doing is staring into space, chewing on a pencil eraser.

My kids are also home by 3, so my hours need to end by then during the school week.

I also try to attend mass three times during the week, so my hours are worked around those times.

My basic hours are 10-3, although I will write at other times; I make my writing portable enough that I can jot things down anywhere.

Work around your life, but be diligent. Any and all writing is good writing during Nanowrimo. Edits are for December.
